Vev vs

Wix

Even though Vev and Wix are often compared, we will be the first to tell you that the two platforms are built for different use cases, and totally different target users.

Here we'll take you through the fundamental differences between the two of us, to help you pick the right platform for your needs.

Vev

What use cases are the platforms suitable for?

Vev is built to help you break free from the rigid templates in your existing CMS. Instead of switching platforms, you can use Vev to build close to anything, whether that be full-on websites or marketing material you want to include on your existing website.

Designing in Vev is similar to working in your favourite design or prototyping tool. A free roaming canvas to bring your unique vision to life.

Build and scale the production of highly customized websites (the sites you used to build with hard code), campaigns, interactive storytelling, product launches or anything you can dream up.

Vev offers amazing flexibility for designers and developers alike, so if you are working as a team, Vev can help you streamline your production process and bring your wildest ideas to life at super speed.

The Vev website is built with Vev.

Wix's beginner friendly, drag-and-drop editor makes it easy to create a website. Wix is suitable for anything from personal online portfolios to small business websites.

When building in Wix, you build based on templates with limited options for customization. Wix is popular amongst small-business owners and non-professional users who are ok with using templates.

For more professional users, it is a well-known fact that ease-of-use has been prioritized above the ability to customize your site to look 'just so'.

Hosting options

Host with us or set up an integration that enables you to one-click-publish to your own CMS.

Our integrations will allow you to click "publish" in Vev, and the sites and content will automatically be transferred and hosted on your own server.

Having the sites or content hosted on your own server is critical for some companies because it ensures that the sites produced in Vev are included in your existing domain structure.

This also streamlines and automates the publishing process.

Your technical department will be pleased to learn:

  • Pre-rendered content ensures fast loading and high SEO scores.

  • We do not use inline styles, ensuring you high-performing sites.

Your Wix site and all of its content is hosted exclusively on Wix’s servers, and cannot be exported elsewhere.

Specifically, it is not possible to export or embed files, pages or sites, created using the Wix Editor or ADI to another external destination or host.

If you embed a site into an external location, Wix is no longer in control of the way that your site appears or functions, and therefore, cannot provide support. In addition, Google Analytics and search engine crawlers are not able to work properly with an embedded site.

When creating a site with Wix, you won’t own our website. You won’t own your design. You’re simply one of thousands of subscribers to the Wix platform, which you are granted a revocable license to you.

Who owns the content?

You own the finished site. When you publish and host a Vev site on your CMS, the site will always be in your possession.

In our terms, we state that you have the right to export your site as a Zip file for a fixed cost. This makes it safe to start using Vev without being 'locked in' - in case you decide to unsubscribe to Vev.

Since Wix host your website, they own it and you'll lose the work if you no longer subscribe to the platform.

Code flexibility and customization

To empower the future of no-code, we have included the possibility to make your own front-end React components that you can share with your team and edit visually in the design editor.

Tie in third-party backend services you're already using to build whatever you want in Vev.

To customize anything in Wix, you are forced to use Wix's own framework to tweak the code. This is a hard transition for developers, as this is a clunky and slow framework they most likely have not worked with before.

Therefor you should only use Wix if you are ok with using their templates close to their original state.

Built to connect vs. built to lock-in.

With Vev you can one-click-publish sites directly to your own CMS (works with any CMS such as WordPress, Shopify, etc.), or host on a custom domain through Vev.

Wix does not allow for self-hosting. You must use their servers. This means you are locked into Wix if you decide to build your site on the platform.

To summarize.

Wix is template-based, with limited customizability, which makes it easy for anyone to have and manage a website. On the other hand, Wix, and other no-code solutions, prioritize ease of use at the expense of flexibility. Also, for professional businesses, the lock-in effect is a crucial show stopper.

We built Vev to enable professional users – designers, developers and content editors – to collaboratively create customized digital products at scale. This calls for a more advanced and flexible tool while packing the platform with solutions for increasing productivity and scalability.
